Sample daily server management tasks


1Disk Check of the ServerAll the partitions must contain at least 500 MB to 800 MB free space. Alert if disk usage of any partition is above 80%.
Nagios : Frequency 4Hrs. Define partitions for the server in Nagios
2Check for the Memory and Swap Utilization Top -c , free . Check top 5 max Mem  using processes and confirm normality
3CPU usageLast 24 hrs Nagios graphs to check abnormalities.  Check top 5 max cpu using processes and confirm normality
4Check Clean /etc/hosts.deny and  iptables  Make sure that none of the entry is older than 30 days
5Check the logwatch generated mail and attend all errors.
a. Excessive logins - Send mail to customers through ssd .
b. Failed login attempts > 10 times,  contact customer and get it resolved.
c. Error messages - debug
Logwatch generated mail for the server in l2support mail box.  Check the mail 
6Check /usr/local/apache/logs/error_log - or /var/log/httpd/error_log  , Send mail to customers, if it's a web server
7Check /usr/local/cpanel/logs  error_log , panic.log ,  
8Check for cPanel Updates mail in l2support.
9Check rootkit analysis mail in l2support
10 Check /var/log/lfd.log for errors.
11Check WHM / Cpanel Mail relayer analysis : attend errors                Login to whm , check view relayers  , check spam / non deliveries / mail size / problems and inform customers.
12Customer Specific Task checksVerify backups
